The word Myeín
[pronounced /meiːn/]
derives from the Greek μυεῖν and is a verb meaning “to initiate”. It also refers to how people had to close their eyes and lips to avoid revealing the secrets of the mysteries they had witnessed. The verb is rooted in the words myth and mystery, referring to that which is unknown or which we don't have words for yet - therefore reconnecting to the lips, which had to remain closed.
When we combine the meaning with the concept of cinema, it could be argued that this is what cinema does. It initiates you into another, mystical world. However, you could also read it as a paradox because in cinema you open your eyes to see, but in this context, you need to close your eyes for the mysteries of life to reveal themselves!
